If you have decided to treat yourself to one quality (gaming) laptop for under $ 800, you are in luck because you will come across a good choice in this price range. On the other hand, if you are looking for better performance for more money, you can look at a selection of the best laptops under $ 1,000 or $ 1,500.
In case of a limited budget, you can also find a reasonable offer under $ 500.
So what can you expect from a (gaming) laptop that costs under $ 800?
This lower-mid-range laptop comes with a discrete graphics card of the latest generation from AMD or NVIDIA. In addition to a solid graphics card, uniform quality of other elements is also required; processor, screen, memory, cooling system, and storage space.
So, despite the slightly lower price, you can find quite a decent laptop that will be able to launch some of the latest AAA gaming titles. Of course, don’t expect high detail level in games, but with a reasonable level of detail.
The best gaming laptop under $ 800 must meet the following criteria:
- aesthetically pleasing,
- good portability,
- processor (CPU) capable of keeping up with the graphics card,
- minimum 8 GB DDR4 RAM and PCIe NVMe storage,
- discrete graphics card,
- good thermal characteristics,
- quality display, and last but not the least
- decent battery life.

1. Acer Nitro 5 (RTX 3050)
|
|
First Impression
The Acer Nitro 5 looks quite simple, without some overemphasized details. This gaming design is appreciated by gamers who like a minimalist look. It’s made of black and simple plastic, with quite a flex on the screen cover and around the keyboard. Unfortunately, black is the lure for fingerprints.
The frame of the screen is unusually thick, almost one inch. The screen hinges are solid and secure, so you will hardly be able to open the screen cover with one hand. Overall, decent design and build without significant flaws.
Keyboard
The keyboard on the Acer Nitro 5 comes with a numeric part, is quite comfortable to work with, and is relatively fast. The backlight is red, as are the symbols on the keys, while the WASD keys are particularly prominent. There’s nothing to talk about the touchpad, it performs its function perfectly, and gamers don’t need it unless their mouse is broken or inaccessible.
144 Hz IPS panel
The Acer Nitro has a 15.6-inch IPS screen with 1080p resolution and a reasonable refresh rate of 144 Hz. The display quality is solid, and the colors work correctly, but the brightness could have been better because the screen looks dim. Viewing angles are good, and the minus goes to the thick frames around the screen that are rarely seen today on modern laptops.
The display response time is relatively fast, especially suitable for competitive players. The screen also features ComfyView technology for reduced eye strain through less light reflection for more comfortable screen viewing.
CPU Intel Core i5-10300H
The Intel Core i5-10300H is a fast 10th-generation mobile processor based on the Comet Lake-H series. It comes with four physical cores and can execute up to 8 threads simultaneously, thanks to HyperThreading. The operating clock is 2.5 GHz with a boost of up to 4.5 GHz. All four cores can operate up to a maximum of 4.2 GHz.
The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2933 RAM. The processor has 8 MB of L3 cache and integrated Intel UDH 630 graphics. Integrated graphics are not in the domain of AMD APU solutions but will serve some simpler older games.
Installed RAM
There are two RAM slots behind the laptop’s bottom cover for future memory upgrades. One slot takes up 8 GB of DDR4-2933 RAM. For today’s conditions, 8 GB of RAM is the minimum, so I highly recommend upgrading to another 8 GB of RAM, giving you 16 GB of system memory that will work in dual-channel mode.
Storage
The Acer Nitro 5 comes with an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in 2280 format. The specific WD PC SN530 has a capacity of only 256 GB, with a sequential read and write of 2400/950 MB/s. Acer has left room for a single 2.5″ SATA 3 HDD or SSD to expand storage space. The built-in NVMe SSD is of low capacity, so I recommend that you extend the storage space with one SATA 3 SSD of at least 512 GB.
GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop
The Acer Nitro 5 comes with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card, a mobile version of the GA107 Ampere chip, and the slowest RTX 3000 mobile graphics. The RTX 3050 offers 2048 CUDA, 16 Raytracing, 64 Tensor cores, 4GB of GDDR6 video memory, and a 128-bit memory bus.
The operating clock depends on the projected consumption (TGP) from 35 to 80W, and Acer opted for a 75W TGP model. The faster RTX 3050 Ti offers 25% higher performance at similar core speeds and TGP.
External ports and other
The Acer Nitro 5 isn’t particularly generous regarding the number of connections.
On the left are:
- Lock slot
- RJ-45 1GbE LAN port
- 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
On the right are:
- USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C (up to 10 Gbps)
- USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A
- HDMI 2.0
As for network communication, Acer didn’t save. Nitro 5 supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0 via the built-in Intel communication module (AX201). You can also make a wired connection via RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet.
Gaming laptops are known for their short battery life, so the Acer Nitro 5 is no exception. With moderate operation and Wi-Fi use, expect around 4.50 h without charging, while gaming would be around 1.50 h.
The Acer Nitro 5 is a decent gaming laptop for budget gamers who want to enter the RTX world for little money. It has a good keyboard and a solid screen, and you can comfortably play if you set the details to a reasonable level. You should upgrade the system memory to 16GB for dual-channel operation and insert another SATA 3 SSD to store your games and other software, as your built-in NVMe will soon be cramped.
2. HP Victus 16 (RTX 3050)
|
|
First Impression
HP, with the Victus model, visually stands out from other manufacturers. Victus 16 is an elegantly designed gaming laptop in a not very common 16.1-inch format. HP has done an excellent job with a discreet and elegant design. Of the details, I single out only the V mark on the screen cover and the ventilation openings on the underside. So, at first glance, the laptop doesn’t reveal its gaming side, and you can fit it into any severe office environment.
The build quality is decent, but the plastic could be more robust to avoid vibrations and cracking. The HP Victus 16 has a slightly more aggressive design with sharp edges that can bother someone. However, the biggest drawback is plastic, a real magnet for fingerprints.
Keyboard
The Victus 16 has an illuminated keyboard, so gaming or serious work won’t be a problem, even in a dark room. Note the unusual position of the power button and the Insert and Delete keys. Although the keyboard is in full format, with a numeric part, specific keys have been reduced due to less space. The arrow keys are hardly suitable for gaming due to their size.
As for the comfort of typing, there are no complaints. The touchpad is big enough for comfortable use, and the only complaint is on the left and right clicks, which are a bit stiffer and noisier. However, every severe gamer will use a favorite gaming mouse instead of a touchpad.
60 Hz IPS panel
Although the refresh rate is at a modest 60 Hz, the screen on the Victus 16 brings a lot of vivid colors. There is a 144 Hz screen variant, but this model is more expensive. If you opt for a model with a slower refresh rate of 60 Hz, I advise you to connect an external monitor with a 120 Hz or higher refresh rate.
But let’s go back to a specific display model with decent color coverage and a response time of 10 ms. Excellent 1200: 1 contrast and an acceptable brightness of 340 cd/m2 ensure a display above the usual average on gaming laptops.
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
AMD Ryzen 5 5600H is a mobile processor for gaming laptops based on the Cezanne generation (Zen 3 microarchitecture). The processor integrates six physical cores and 12 threads. The base clock of 3.3 GHz can reach 4.3 GHz in Turbo mode.
In addition to six CPU cores, the APU integrates a Radeon RX Vega 7 integrated graphics processor with 7 CUs running at 1800 MHz. The dual-channel memory controller supports DDR4-3200 RAM. Furthermore, you can find 16 MB of the L3 cache on the chip (19 MB total).
Depending on the vendor and laptop model, TDP is specified at 45 W (default) and can be configured from 35 to 54 W.
Installed RAM
There are two RAM slots behind the laptop’s bottom cover for future memory upgrades. One slot takes up 8 GB of Samsung DDR4-3200 RAM. For today’s conditions, 8 GB of RAM is the minimum, so I highly recommend upgrading to another 8 GB of RAM, giving you 16 GB of system memory that will work in dual-channel mode.
Storage
HP Victus 16 comes with an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in 2280 format. The specific Western Digital SN730 has a capacity of 512 GB, with a sequential read and write of 3400/2700 MB/s. HP has left another empty M.2 slot for future storage expansion if the capacity of 512 GB is tight.
GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop
HP Victus 16 comes with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card, a mobile version of the GA107 Ampere chip, and the slowest RTX 3000 mobile graphics. The RTX 3050 offers 2048 CUDA, 16 Raytracing, 64 Tensor cores, 4GB of GDDR6 video memory, and a 128-bit memory bus.
The operating clock depends on the projected consumption (TGP) from 35 to 80W, and HP opted for a 75W TGP model (just like the Acer model).
External ports and other
The connectors could have been a bit newer, and you will notice that the AMD platform lacks Thunderbolt. You have 4 USB ports available that only support the 3.2 Type 1 standard.
On the left are:
- power connection
- RJ-45 1GbE LAN port
- HDMI 2.1
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
- card reader
On the right are:
- 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
HP Victus 16 supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.2 via the built-in RTL8852AE module. You can also make a wired connection via RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet. As for the battery life, with the moderate operation and Wi-Fi, expect around 5.5 h without charging, while in gaming, it would be approximately 1.1 h.
The HP Victus 16 is an elegantly and discreetly designed gaming laptop that easily fits any non-gaming environment. It has decent performance, a comfortable keyboard, and a solid screen, and you can play quite comfortably if you set the details to a reasonable level.
I recommend upgrading the RAM to 16 GB for dual channel operation, and if you can set aside a little more money, choose a display with a 144 Hz refresh rate.
3. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (GTX 1650)
|
|
First Impression
Lenovo also has a decent entry-level gaming laptop in its rich offer. The case of Ideapad Gaming 3 is made of quality black plastic (Black Onyx), and its design doesn’t reveal the gaming nature of the laptop.
The build quality is decent, the hinges hold the lid firmly, but it is still possible to open it with one hand. The Lenovo brand is only discreetly written on the screen cover and inside the case, without any other flashy and intrusive details. A good build and elegant design will attract a more severe group of users.
Keyboard
Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 has a built-in chiclet keyboard with eye-pleasing blue backlighting. It’s possible to adjust the lighting on two levels (or off) using the function key (Fn+ Spacebar). The concave keys have a medium stroke and fairly sharp resistance.
The keyboard is quite comfortable to type with, so Lenovo supplies a quality keyboard for everyday use. The touchpad is big enough and comfortable to use, so there is nothing to complain about.
120 Hz IPS panel
Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 has a 15.6-inch IPS screen with 1080p resolution and a reasonable refresh rate of 120 Hz. The display quality is solid, and the colors work correctly, but the contrast could have been better. The brightness is below 300 cd/m2 (293 cd / m2), although the contrast is relatively low (753: 1).
Lighting over 300 cd/m2 and a contrast of at least 1000: 1 are desirable for comfortable operation. You will have problems using your laptop (screen reading) in brighter rooms or outdoors. Viewing angles are pretty good for an IPS panel, but avoid using the laptop outside, especially if the sun is intense.
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptop processor is the same as the HP Victus 16 model.
Furthermore, there are 16 MB of the L3 cache on the chip. The TDP of the APU is specified at 45 W (default) and can be configured from 35 to 54 W.
Storage
IdeaPad Gaming 3 comes with an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in 2242 format. The specific SK Hynix SSD has a capacity of only 256 GB, with a sequential read and write of 2300/1000 MB/s. Lenovo has left room for a single 2.5″ SATA 3 device and other NVMe SSDs. You can use NVMe SSDs in M.2 2230 and M.2 2280 formats.
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Laptop
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 for laptops is a slightly faster graphics card than the older GTX 1050 Ti. There are variants of the GTX 1650 with DDR5 or GDDR6 graphics memory, so check the specifications before buying a laptop.
The specific graphics card model in the Ideapad Gaming 3 laptop comes with GDDR6. The operating clock is 1515 MHz (Boost), and the memory runs at 1500 MHz on a 128-bit interface. Lenovo specified consumption for the GTX 1650 at 50 W TGP (Total Graphics Power).
External ports and other
The IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptop comes with a classic port configuration. All connectors are arranged on the right and left. 3 USB ports work according to the USB 3.2 Gen 1 standard (up to 5 Gbps) with the proviso that a single USB-C port doesn’t offer the DisplayPort function.
Only the HDMI output remains available for connecting an external monitor. The laptop also doesn’t offer an SD memory card reader.
On the left are:
- power connection
- RJ-45 1GbE LAN port
- HDMI 2.0
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
On the right are:
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
IdeaPad Gaming 3 offers a Wi-Fi 6 chip. The built-in WLAN chip supports Wi-Fi 6 (i.e., 802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0. You can also make a wired connection via RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek’s RTL8168/8111). As for the battery life, with the moderate operation and Wi-Fi, expect around 6 hours without charging, while in gaming, it would be about 1.3 h.
Lenovo’s affordable gaming laptop has enough computing power for all typical applications and moderate gaming. A reasonably powerful AMD Ryzen 5 CPU combined with a discrete GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card will not create a bottleneck for most modern games. The 256GB NVMe SSD is fast but cramped for severe work or gaming.
The 120 Hz display is correct for comfortable gaming; the complaint is that the contrast is too low. The battery is good, which cannot say for the versatility and freshness of the connectors on the laptop.
4. MSI GF63 Thin ( GTX 1650 Max-Q)
|
|
First Impression
The MSI G63 Thin is a budget gaming laptop that doesn’t have as solid and quality builds as its higher-end GE or GT models. The case is black plastic made and has some flex. A screen cover is coated with brushed aluminum. Although it looks pretty elegant, the metal surface of the lid is also a lure for fingerprints.
The laptop is relatively thin, only 0.85 inches, and weighs 1.8 kg (3.9 lb), which is pretty slim and light for a 15.6-inch notebook. The screen is on solid hinges that allow the screen to open up to 150 °. The MSI G63 Thin is an affordable, compact, lightweight gaming laptop that won’t take up much space in your backpack.
Keyboard
The keyboard on the MSI GF63 comes without a numeric part (TKL design). The stroke of the keys is relatively shallow as on any ultrabook. The lighting is in one color, red, without RGB, which comes with more expensive models. You can adjust the backlight by pressing Fn + PgUp and Fn + PgDn.
The typing experience on this keyboard is quite pleasant for a gaming laptop. The touchpad is quite comfortable to work with, so there is nothing to complain about its size or functionality.
60 Hz IPS panel
Since the MSI GF63 Thin is a budget gaming laptop, the 1080p IPS screen has a refresh rate of just 60 Hz. The contrast is pretty good (1130: 1), but the brightness is below 300 cd/m2 (260 cd/m2), suitable for darker rooms but limits usability in daylight.
Unfortunately, the response time isn’t great (over 30 ms), which will bother competitive players, but this is normal for almost any budget display. The color coverage is below average, but the viewing angles are decent for a typical IPS screen. All in all, I recommend that you get a good external monitor if you plan to use this laptop mainly at home.
CPU Intel Core i5-10300H
The Intel Core i5-10300H is a fast 10th-generation mobile processor based on the Comet Lake-H series (4th generation of Skylake architecture). It comes with four physical cores and can execute up to eight threads simultaneously, thanks to HyperThreading. The operating clock is 2.5 GHz with a boost of up to 4.5 GHz (up to 4.2 with four cores).
The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2933 RAM. The processor has 8 MB of L3 cache and integrated Intel UDH 630 graphics. Integrated graphics aren’t in the domain of AMD APU solutions but will serve some simpler older games.
Installed RAM
MSI GF63C comes with a generous 16GB of DDR4-2666 RAM (2×8), enough for this laptop’s gaming challenges. Quality DDR4 2666 Mhz memory comes with a Samsung signature, but MSI may put components from different vendors with similar specifications depending on the stock status.
Storage
The MSI GF63 comes with an M.2 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD in 2280 format and sequential read and write of 1400/700 MB/s. Unfortunately, although the capacity of the NVMe SSD is solid, the read and write speeds are below expectations for PCIe technology.
There’s no other M.2 slot where you could place a secondary NVMe drive. If you want to expand your storage space, there’s room to set up a 2.5″ SATA 3 HDD or SSD.
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q
For GF63 Thin, MSI opted for the discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card, Max-Q (Turing architecture). The GTX 1650 is the successor to the GeForce GTX 1050 (Pascal architecture). The Max Q in the designation means that this version of the GTX 1650 runs at slightly lower clocks to be successfully integrated into thin laptops.
The base clock is 990 MHz, but it can reach over 1150 MHz with Turbo mode. Except for the clock speed, other specifications are identical to the standard version of the GTX 1650 for laptops. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q has 4 GB of GDDR6 memory and a 128-bit interface. Compared to the standard GTX 1650, the Max-Q version is up to 20% slower at worst.
External ports and other
The MSI GF63 Thin comes with a modest number of older ports. Behind the laptop, we find only the HDMI 2.0 port, while the other ports are arranged on the right and left.
The following ports come from the left:
- power connection
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
On the right are:
- 2x 3.5mm audio jack
- 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C
- RJ-45 1GbE LAN port
- Lock slot
As for network communication, GF63 supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.1 via the built-in Intel communication module (AX201). You can also make a wired connection via RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet. Expect about 4 hours of battery life with moderate laptop use and Wi-Fi. If we step into the gaming world, count on barely an hour without battery charging.
MSI made a compact, lightweight, and aesthetically pleasing gaming laptop but had to limit the GPU clocks due to possible overheating. Therefore, the GF63 Thin model is about 20% slower than other models with the standard version of the GTX 1650.
In short, the MSI GF63 Thin is a compact, lightweight, and relatively affordable gaming laptop. If you don’t mind the small number of obsolete ports, but portability is a priority, the GF63 is a good choice. You have better options for all other features in this price range.
5. Dell G3 15 3500 (GTX 1650 Ti)
|
|
First Impression
At first glance, the Dell G3 15 is a classic gaming laptop priced at just over $ 800. In return, you will get a receptively designed laptop with decent performance. Don’t forget that Dell also sells Alienware gaming laptops, which are higher class, but here we are based on the budget gaming variant the manufacturer marks with G3.
The Dell G3 15 is a strong plastic made, giving the laptop a relatively robust and reliable look and feel. You’ll notice Dell hasn’t exaggerated some overemphasized gaming details, so the G3 15 still looks pretty classic. The hinges are solid and reliable enough to hold a screen that you can open with one hand without any problems.
The G3 15 isn’t a light or compact laptop with its 2.3 kg (5 lb), so Dell doesn’t seem to have designed this model for frequent carrying. Check out the MSI GF63 Thin model if you need a lightweight, portable gaming laptop.
Keyboard
The keyboard comes in full format and is very pleasant to type, although it’s not its primary purpose on a gaming laptop. The response of the keys is quite good, they respond well to pressure, and there will be no problems even if you are a writer. Two-stage backlighting comes in handy in low-ambient lighting (Fn + F10 key combination).
The touchpad is large enough and comfortable to use and can serve as a replacement for a mouse. The keys are positioned at the bottom and are not too noisy when clicking.
120 Hz IPS panel
Dell G3 15 comes with a 15.6-inch IPS screen in 1080p resolution and a decent refresh rate of 120 Hz. The colors are pretty faithful, the lighting is good enough, and the contrast is excellent (1300: 1). The Dell G3 15 is even more suitable for brighter rooms and outdoors. The IPS panel on the Dell G3 15 has a good viewing angle. You can view the content on the screen from various angles without distorting or displaying distorted colors.
The display response time is relatively fast (about 14 ms), especially suitable for competitive gamers. The problem can occur if you watch dark content on the screen when noticeable backlight bleeding occurs.
CPU Intel Core i5-10300H
The Dell G3 15 and MSI GF63 Thin have identical Intel Core i5-10300H. CPU comes with four physical cores and can execute up to eight threads simultaneously, thanks to HyperThreading.
Behind the bottom cover of the Dell G3 15 are two RAM slots, one of which is free for future RAM upgrades. One slot takes up 8 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM (single channel mode). 8 GB of RAM is the minimum for decent gaming in today’s conditions. I highly recommend upgrading to another 8 GB of RAM, which will give you 16 GB of RAM that will work in dual-channel mode.
Storage
Dell gaming laptop comes with an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in 2280 format, and the concrete model is SK Hynix BC511 SSD with 512 GB and sequential read and writes of 2300/1000 MB/s. Dell has left another empty M.2 slot for future storage expansion, except for this one for the primary disk.
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
The Dell G3 15 has a discrete graphics card as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile. The graphics card is similar to the desktop version with the same TU117 chip (Turing architecture), with all 1024 shaders enabled for the mobile version.
The GTX 1650 Ti mobile power consumption is 50 to 80 W TGP by Nvidia and is 5 to 25 W higher than the regular GTX 1650. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti comes with 4 GB of GDDR6 memory and a 128-bit interface.
External ports and other
The Dell G3 15 offers a solid choice of ports. A good option is multiple video outputs, including Display Port over a USB-C port and HDMI.
The following ports come from the left:
- power connection
- USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with DisplayPort
- HDMI 2.0
- USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A
- RJ-45 1GbE LAN port
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
On the right are:
- SD card reader
- 2x USB 2.0 Type-A
- Lock slot
As for network communication, Dell G3 15 supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0 via the built-in Intel communication module (AX201). You can also make a wired connection via RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet. Expect about 5 hours of battery life (68 Wh) with moderate laptop use and Wi-Fi. If we step into the gaming world, count on barely an hour and a half without battery charging.
The Dell G3 15 will not disappoint you in performance or enticing gaming design. Solid construction infuses a dose of stability and reliability. Disadvantages include a screen that isn’t great in dark scenes, a slow SD card reader, and a slightly higher price than the competition.
Conclusion
If you want the best gaming laptop under $ 800, let it be the Acer Nitro 5 that will give you an unforgettable gaming experience for the money invested. The only drawback may be that you need to upgrade the system memory to 16GB (dual-channel mode) and storage as soon as possible.
Other laptops are also good so that they will decide your affinity or experience towards another brand. Each laptop has advantages and disadvantages, and it is up to you to weigh well and choose the best according to your needs and available money.
Finally, consider the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 if you have a small budget and want a decent gaming laptop. If your budget doesn’t allow for more expensive models, check out gaming laptops under $ 500 that can pleasantly surprise you with quality and performance.
Lastly, if you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment.
